Workshops
Pre-Conference Workshop
25 June 2012 9am - 4pm |
Using Operational Excellence to
improve Mine Productivity
This one-day interactive course will cover topics on application techniques
and the successful integration of a modified Six Sigma process into the
company’s business model. It is designed for both those considering
Six Sigma as their next business-critical initiative and also those who are
already in the roll-out phase. Operational excellence and international
benchmarking performance improvement tools resulting in an increase
on operational productivities by 45% is a key focus as well.Case studies
from mining companies in various regions will be presented, analysed
and discussed. Participants will take away techniques and templates
which can be immediately applied within their own operations.
- Using a modified Six Sigma process to identify root causes of productivity issues
- Implementing 20 Keys to Performance Improvement - critical success factors
- How operating excellence can change a project IRR from 15% to 35%
- Results of international benchmarking on performance improvement efforts used by 15 mining groups globally

Post-Conference Workshop
28 June 2012 9am - 4pm |
Where have all the minerals gone?
Responding to the rising cost of
mine infrastructure
The past 12 years have seen the capital costs surrounding mining infrastructure
increase by 30% to over 70% of total project cost. (Source ABS).
Today, infrastructure dominates mine capital costs and risk. The workshop
will discuss mine feasibility studies ledby enabling infrastructure. The
process plant design then becomes incorporated into the study as
one of several specialist packages including power plants, transport,
accommodation and water that will drive more accurate project costing.
Benefits for clients will include reduced and more certain project costs,
lower requirements for electricity and water, leading to more sustainable
mines, and staged delivery of infrastructure in line with more accurate
project lifecycle scheduling.
Topics to be covered include:
- The rising cost of infrastructure and why it is occurring
- The implications for developing new mining projects
- Other non-economic factors – community, environment, climate
change and approvals
- The historical mine development “linear” process and a proposed
alternative integrated process
- Outcomes of this approach:
- shorter project timelines
- designs and energy needs
- make better decisions; ore value by NPV
- project cost – do more with less
- Case studies
